When the Astronauts first started it was a very small group, sort of like a fraternity and they insignia the military placed on the wings of its astronauts became a lapel pin when they were wearing a suit.. This is a museum quality reproduction of a WWII C-46 cargo aircraft. It was a high-altitude design first placed into service in 1942 by the Army Air Force and by the Navy as the R5C. The aircraft remain in service with the Air Force until 1968. A total of 3,181 of these aircraft were built.
