Delta operated the largest Lockheed L-1011 fleet, up to 56 of the aircraft at one time, many of which supported international service. Between 1973 and 2001 the airline utilized a total of 70 L-1011s, serving a total of 79 domestic and international destinations.

This model represents the last L-1011 in Delta's fleet, ship N728DA. It was built in 1979 and flew approximately 30,890 flights up to its retirement on July 31, 2001. The plane was then donated by Delta to Flying Hospital, a nonprofit airborne hospital that performs surgeries in Third World countries. N728DA was used for parts to support the operation of Flying Hospitals converted L-1011.
