OBERST WALTER OESAU, GESCHWADERKOMMODORE OF JAGDGESCHWADER 1, M†NCHEN-GLADBACH, APRIL 1944

An eight-victory Spanish Civil War ace, Walter Oesau saw extensive combat in WWII both on the Eastern and Western Fronts with no fewer than four different units. He flew both the Bf 109 and the Fw 190, and was perhaps best known for his leadership of both JG 1 and 2 on the Western Front. Having been in combat for almost the entire war, Oesau was killed in action fighting USAAF P-38s on May 11, 1944, by which time his score had reached 118 victories.
